Odin’s Teenage Rites of Passage Vision Quest Ritual
Mountain vistas explored alone
Summer Junior Odin Vision Quest
This was the rite of passage for any teenage Viking who wanted to make contact with Odin and the god/goddess of the North.
I took up this ritual 15 years ago when I was a teenager and only partially performed it with great results.
Always remember that I, Ragnar Storyteller, was outlawed by the Asatru Alliance and self imposed godis and leaders, Odin allowed some very powerful rituals to be placed on my site.
He and I are on the same page,
If not actual physical contact, then psychological attunement.
I need to update Odin and the runes and our ancestral god/goddess to the 21st century. Free Odin from the shackles of the Viking Age.
I got this ritual when I was with and writing the first book for Odin.
Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night with the urge to write something? Grab a pen and paper and write as fast as you can. Then, when you’re done, read it to see what you wrote?
That book is The Return of Odin.
Therefore, the easiest way for me to introduce you to this ritual is to copy it abridged from a book.
Here’s Odin’s return:
“The summer solstice is approaching, and Thorolfr is thirteen years old. His manhood. The blood of his ancestors is running wildly in his veins. He is not tall enough, but he is bigger than any other boy in the village. He stands almost as tall as a grown man. His muscles bulge proudly under his thin clothing.
“… Thorolfr set out for the mountains the next morning to begin his Odin ritual
“He has to remember all the steps the man in the hood told him the last time they met.
“As he walked up the hill through the forest, his eyes searched the area for a tree. It had to be a special tree. A tree that had been struck by lightning. He needed to gather wood from it for his Odin ritual.
“…where a huge ash tree was stripped of all its branches and split down the middle.
“It was struck by Thor’s lightning. It was exactly what he needed for the Odins ritual.
“He pulled some rope out of his backpack and tied the wood into a bundle.
“He can still feel the heat in the woods. But how is that possible? There hasn’t been a storm in a week.
“He laughed and recalled the stories his father told around the campfire about how Odin and other gods/goddesses would intervene and perform miracles and magical things to prepare for certain rituals.
“…he started walking towards the mountain again, and the words Odin said to him echoed in his head. ‘…like a god you must live, like a god you must die…'”
He climbed slowly and steadily. The bundle of logs on his back weighed him down and he had to shift the load from time to time.
“Towards evening he finally found a gap between a bunch of bushes.
“…he pushed through the bushes and saw a small cave. It was perfect for his three-night Odin vigil.
“That night he lit a fire on the sacred wood and kept watch alone in the cave. He had nothing to eat or drink but bread and water.
“The masked man told him that he must purify himself by fasting bread and water.
“That night, as he sat by the fire, he felt a strangeness that he had never felt before. He felt a presence, a higher being, the presence of God.
“He couldn’t see them, but he could feel them. He shuddered when he thought about their intimacy.
“…for three days and three nights Thorolfr remained in the cave, sustaining himself on bread and water.
“Then at midnight on the third day, Thorolfr rekindled the fire with the last holy wood.
He sat in front of the fire, dazed. Three days of silence and fasting had heightened his level of consciousness, and his mind was sharp and studious.
“The flame before him danced to and fro, and swayed in a hidden rhythm. He watched it in silent fascination.
“The little face appeared in the flames, and Thorolfr knew instinctively that the fire was alive.
“…he stood up and looked deeply into the flames. The flames parted, and he saw a godlike figure standing at the entrance of a bridge. A rainbow of lights shone across the bridge.
“…the godlike man, in full battle attire and winged helmet, stared sternly at Thorolfr.
I did not perform the following part of the ritual, other than pricking my thumb with a dagger to draw a little blood. Any teenager who performs this ritual can do so. I only present it to you because it is for me. )
“…he remembered what the hooded man had told him he must do. He took the dagger from his belt.
“…then he said, ‘May my blood sacrifice help to bring the gods of my fathers back to my world. May my blood help to revive the ancestral spirits of kin.
“…then he made three cuts in his chest with a dagger, allowing the blood to flow unhindered.
“He held the tip of the dagger and let the blood flow on it.
“He said, ‘With this blood, I dedicate myself to Odin and the god/goddess of my ancestors.
“…he let his blood drip into the flames.
“When he had finished, he held up his hand and said, ‘In the name of Orton, Thor, and Tyr, I dedicate myself to the preservation of the spirits of our ancestors.
“…he waited until the last trace of life was extinguished from the fire. Then he packed his things and started to go back down the mountain to the village.”
It really is a very powerful teenage rite of passage.
One of the reasons we as Nordic people are losing our country and being forced out of the cities is because other cultures have kept rites of passage for their children.
Native Americans have theirs; Asians have theirs, Jews have theirs, even inner city gangsters have theirs
It’s time for us to have an independent one-to-one relationship with Odin and our ancestral god/goddess.
But most importantly, we must free them from the shackles of the Viking Age and bring them into the 21st century where we can empower them.
