The New Stacy Lattisaw – Been Through the Fire and I’m Not the Same Girl!
When a young Stacy Lattisaw sang the hit “Let Me Be Your Angel” in 1980, she didn’t know the lyrics would be prophetic.
Fast forward to today and we have Stacy Lattisaw-Jackson, minister, motivational speaker, CEO, wife of 19 years and mother of two. It’s comforting to talk to Stacy because she knows where she’s been, what she has and where she’s going. Her purpose and passion were clear when she told me “I’m Not the Same Girl,” which is the title of her book. “The closer I get to God, the more I understand His plan for me”. Stacy is the CEO of Believer’s Building Bridges; her company publishes her book and is home to her youth empowerment program. Stacy’s mission is to help children. She hosts conferences and youth events, encourages kids to finish school, and convinces them they don’t have to follow the crowd. She challenges them to stand up and be a leader. She also teaches with integrity and without fear to support abstinence. “There aren’t many role models for our kids today, so I do my best to set an example for as many of them as possible.” Heartbroken for those who were bullied “I had a hard time at school and was called a white girl and a yellow girl because I was so light. I was quiet, shy and a bit timid so people thought it was stuck up. ’ Unfortunately, after she became a child actress, things took a turn for the worse. “You know when you reach a certain level of success, everybody’s not happy for you. A lot of times the opposition comes from our own people.” Not only does she have to worry about the students, but now she’s joined by teachers, “I was 15, Grown women would look me up and down and talk about how I felt about each other.
“I’d turn in the papers, and they’d say they couldn’t find it; anything that harassed me.” Eventually, Stacy’s parents had enough and decided to homeschool her. She went on to become a star.
After crossing over to the mainstream with “Two Ways of Love,” “Miracle,” and “Make Me Your Angel,” Stacy was sheltered by Narada Michael Walden to produce released five hit albums and signed with Motown in 1986.
It’s around this time that Stacey begins to see things that frustrate her. “I realize I’m in an industry with a lot of dishonest people.” “My daughter Kayla wants to be in the industry, she sings and writes songs. But I don’t push her there; in fact, I Encourage her to wait until she’s a little older. I want her to enjoy her childhood and be ready for life in the industry.” Stacey said: “I had a good time being a child actor, but if you’re not prepared, it’s a very bad.”
I know a lot about what Michael Jackson went through as a child actor. “I was lucky enough to be on the Jackson Family Tour and it was a huge opportunity for me. I actually got the chance to talk to Michael and it was a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life.” She recalls a childhood she never had . “I didn’t realize how much I missed growing up until I took my son Kevin to one of his games one day. I was sitting in the car watching them having fun and my mind pulled me back. I Realizing I’ve never been to any school proms or dances, or any school competitions. I was crushed in the car and cried.”
Traveling on the road can be a lot, and when you’re 15, it can be creepy. There were sad moments, “I was forced to leave my family and fly 20 hours to Africa for an event. I was tired and I didn’t want to go. I sat and cried because I was exhausted, but I still had to go. ’ And then there’s some funny memories like, ‘Like when I was on stage, I forgot the words to the second verse. I had to play it down and make up the words.” “Now it’s one of my hits , so everyone in the audience was singing the right words and I was singing the wrong words.”
“I think everyone’s talking about what she’s singing,” she laughs. At this point, they have Stacy on the road at least 4 nights a week. “We had a lot of fun, but we were tired.”
It wasn’t until she recorded “Where Do We Go From Here” with Johnny Gill that she realized she wasn’t ready to enter the music business. Although her mother accompanied her along the way, their knowledge of the industry was very limited. “We were robbed. It was the No. 1 hit on Billboard for weeks and we were told we only sold 30 or 40,000 copies. We all knew that couldn’t be true. Audit, but I know it’s time for me to get out of the business. I told them to move on and keep my portion of the money.”
Stacy left the industry after marrying a consistent sound engineer named Kevin Jackson who was determined to be a permanent presence in her life. “My husband was my sound technician and our first date was at Pizza Hut,” she laughs. “He left his company and we dated for 11 days straight. We got engaged six months later, six months later. Months later we were married.” She said of their relationship, “We couldn’t get a divorce. There is no perfect marriage and we had arguments, but we feared God and respected each other. The secret to a successful marriage is two forgiving people” 10 Seven years later, their business is booming, and he is especially supportive of her ministry. She is currently working on her gospel project in the studio and will announce new music in the future. “This time I am ready.” Stacy encouraged everyone to “learn the industry you want to work in, tap your talents and talents, discover what you are good at, and don’t give up. Some people give up before they give up. Breakthrough comes. Know God Whoever it is, you will know your purpose.”
“Stacy, what do you want people to know about you?”
“I want them to know the real me. I don’t get the chance to show that on certain shows like ‘Unsung Heroes’. That’s one of the reasons I wrote the book. I want people to know that I’m not the same person anymore. Girl, I’ve got a whole new look!”
