Passion, Your Inner Wolf and Freedom
I used to overeat and exercise too much. I use food to comfort me, and then I use exercise as punishment for using food. It was a crazy ass loop that almost ruined me. Seriously, ruined.
I thought I needed to go on a diet to lose the extra pounds. Turns out I was wrong. Dieting only made my problems worse.
I was dying inside.
It has many words – normal, traditional, typical, boring, mediocre, bourgeois, average, orthodox, average, buzzy…you get the idea.
Go back and read them and pay attention to what’s going on with your body.
not good, right? To me, it feels heavy, almost nauseating. It makes me want to eat.
There’s a reason for this, and no better explanation than this brilliant quote from someone I’ve never met on Twitter, but I’m sure I’ll love it, Jim Mitchum. He said, “Passion is the wolf in your chest, and it’s crawling out of its claws. If that sounds painful to you, try denying it.”
That feeling is your wolf. You can’t eat enough to calm her down.
I believe one of the reasons people are overweight and/or depressed is because they deny their passions by trying to stay “normal”. Their inner wolf desperately wants to get out. (By the way, dieting doesn’t inspire passion, which is one of the many reasons why dieting doesn’t work for long-term weight loss.)
This past weekend, I just got off a cruise ship with 1,000 wild, inspiring, passionate entrepreneurs, scientists, innovators, artists, and thought leaders. It was so much fun watching the business mentors I admired in books and lectures act like college frat boys on the dance floor. However, the one thing everyone on that ship has in common is that we all want to break away from mediocrity and normalcy and fully engage in our lives and live our passions. I don’t think any of us are struggling to be normal. If so, they may have jumped overboard long ago. (Actually, five of them did, but for reasons far from trying to be normal. In this case, quite the opposite, but that’s another blog post.)
(Side note: this is my first time sailing, and I keep hearing how much food they serve on these ships, and they’re not lying. Food is 24-7 – pizza, pasta, cakes, cookies, ice cream, etc. However, I ate Less than usual. I didn’t think about food until my stomach rumbled. Why? Because passion got my attention.)
However, I understand the desire to try and fit the box. I was the girl trying to settle down, built a big house, drove a nice car, and worked 12 hour shifts to pay for it all.
I failed miserably.
I am the least active member of the PTO. I didn’t drink around my family, they thought it was a one way ticket to hell. Aside from cooking, I was a household disaster (and still am). I try to pretend that hip-hop isn’t my thing, I prefer Chopin (don’t get me wrong, I like Chopin, but on most days, you’ll find me improvising some Jay-Z or Snoop.) I even try Been a nurse for 13 years, but it certainly brought out the wolf in me. Scratching and pain!
Fail after fail. Sloooooowwwwlllllyyyy dying.
Magical things started to happen when I stopped following all the rules and started living life with my soul. I have developed my own unique relationship with my daughter, we hang out in the living room instead of participating in book club. We travel instead of throwing big birthday parties. I hired a butler to bless those who thought they had to do it themselves. I stopped feeling guilty about traveling a lot and started celebrating my inner bohemian. I dropped out of PTO and wrote stuff like “French Kissing Life” and “Rule My World” during that time. When the opportunity came, I unapologetically drank and celebrated.
Passion became my inner guide, not the rules.
You cannot create success without passion, and you cannot create passion without wildness. It is a raw energy that does not exist in a vacuum, but exists in things that allow its full expression, allow it to be ignited.
When you start following your passion, you will find that you are breaking the rules you used to follow. People will start breaking away from your tribe. You will find yourself in the strangest of situations. Slowly (or not), your world will start to change, but the other side is freedom. Delicious, deliciously free.
Say world free, pay attention to what’s going on in your body.
Ahhh…like cashmere, right?
Between here and cashmere, however, is fear. If you’re living among most people, you’ll be stepping into new territory, and the new often translates into fear. Don’t worry. You will survive. Keep walking toward it, not away from it. Plus, you have a bad wolf to take care of you!
