Who Gets Mesothelioma?

  • Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that occurs in the lining of internal organs in the body, a thin layer of cells called mesothelial cells. Although this layer of cells is very thin, it is vital to organ function and the health of the body’s internal structures. There are three recognized types of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma occurs in the pleural lining of the lungs and is the most common form of the disease. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the peritoneum, which lines the abdominal cavity, and is the second most common form of the disease. Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest disease and occurs in the pericardial lining of the heart. The main cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, but other factors, such as smoking, can increase the likelihood that some people will develop the disease.

about disease

  • In short, mesothelioma, commonly known as asbestos cancer, is an aggressive cancer primarily caused by inhaling dangerous asbestos fibers. The disease attacks mesothelial cells, the protective double membrane that covers the body’s internal organs, including the lungs, heart and abdominal organs. Between these layers, cells create the fluid that allows the heart and lungs to move easily within the chest cavity. The layer that covers the lungs is called the pleura, and the layer that covers the heart is called the pericardium. The peritoneum lines the abdominal cavity. The mesothelium also lines the male and female reproductive organs. Mesothelioma can affect any of these cells, but is usually seen in the pleural or peritoneal mesothelium. The most commonly diagnosed form of this cancer is pleural mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma takes 20 to 50 years to develop, which is why older people are often the victims. However, recent cases involving first responders and cleanup workers at the World Trade Center on September 11 have shown that high levels of asbestos can cause disease to develop more quickly. Some WTC workers have died from the disease.

effects of disease

Invasion of the cancer cells into the mesothelium makes it very difficult for the patient to breathe, leading to a need for oxygen, especially as the disease progresses. Those with pleural mesothelioma may also have pleural effusion. This buildup can prevent the smooth movement of the lungs and other organs in the chest. Peritoneal mesothelioma can also affect the stomach area and abdominal cavity, causing nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite, which can lead to dangerous weight loss. In addition to shortness of breath and loss of appetite, people with mesothelioma complain of excessive coughing, trouble sleeping, persistent chest pain, fever, and lower back pain.

Generally speaking, mesothelioma is a very painful disease because it is usually not diagnosed until the advanced stage. As a result, symptoms are often very severe. A late diagnosis also means the cancer is more likely to metastasize, or spread, making successful treatment of mesothelioma more difficult.

Who gets mesothelioma?

Statistics show that the disease most commonly affects men between the ages of 50 and 70 who worked in asbestos-laden environments before asbestos warnings and bans were introduced in the 1970s, due to their work history. Although women still suffer from the disease much less frequently, cases of second-hand asbestos exposure have prompted more women to be diagnosed with the disease, especially those whose male family members were exposed. The occupations most associated with mesothelioma are shipyard workers, electricians, plumbers, construction workers, pipe fitters, boiler workers, and anyone with significant exposure to dangerous asbestos and airborne asbestos fibers.

Numerous cases have also shown that mesothelioma can develop in people living in communities where asbestos factories or mines are located. In some cases, entire towns have been adversely affected by asbestos fibers in the air. For example, in Libby, Montana — the site of a former vermiculite asbestos mine — hundreds of people have died from mesothelioma.

Although still much rarer than other cancers, an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States each year. Other countries, notably the UK and Australia, reported much higher rates of the disease. Still, the US – like many other countries – has seen an increase in asbestos-caused cancers, as men who worked in US shipyards during the peak production years of the 1940s and 50s are now being diagnosed with mesothelioma .

Dealing with Mesothelioma

  • Mesothelioma is most often diagnosed at an advanced stage, and such a diagnosis can be devastating for an individual and his/her family. Although research on the disease continues, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma. Some patients may be candidates for surgery to remove the tumor or even the entire lung, but most do better with radiation or chemotherapy. Typically, these treatments are palliative and used to reduce the severity of disease symptoms rather than provide a cure.

  • However, medical experts and research scientists are constantly exploring new ways to combat the disease. For example, doctors know that some combinations of chemotherapy drugs are more effective than others, and tests have been developed to identify early diagnoses of disease or monitor high-risk groups.

Whose fault is it?

The reason a person develops mesothelioma is usually not providing proper protection for people exposed to asbestos. Although the dangerous properties of asbestos and asbestos products have been evident for decades, many employers have neglected to protect their workers from inhaling asbestos while on the job. It wasn’t until the public became aware of the material’s dangers in the 1970s that many employers began providing people who worked with asbestos on a daily basis with protective clothing such as respirators, gloves, aprons, and other such items.

Many companies that manufacture asbestos or products that contain asbestos have been subject to thousands of lawsuits from people who have harmed the material due to the negligence of their employers. Many of these lawsuits are from individuals with mesothelioma.
