Teacup Persian Kittens – Setting the Record Straight
You may be asking…what is a teacup Persian kitten?
Different breeders of Persian teacup cats and kittens have different descriptive terms for the smaller strains they work in cattery.
In order to introduce you to these pint-sized pixie Persians, I have dedicated this page to clarifying what a teacup Persian is and why they have acquired the term “teacup” over the years.
First, let me clarify… “Teacup Persian” is a descriptive term, not a size category. So don’t believe false advertising or unrealistic size expectations of what your kitten will look like as an adult.
Many Persian breeders will use the word “teacup” as a marketing ploy to market them, and the only color category that actually earns the “teacup title” is the silver and gold Persian family.
I had a hard time spotting this when I bought myself a blue-eyed white “teacup Persian” a few years ago. He grew to a whopping 15 lbs and had to be placed in a pet house because he was too big to mate with any of my cats. Having had a white Persian cat myself for over 20 years, I should have known better, but as the breeder said, I got stuck in the idea that he would be small.
If someone claims to own a white Persian teacup, a Himalayan teacup, or a two-tone teacup, you can trust them not to be a trustworthy place to send money.
So remember….Teacup Persians must exhibit silver or gold on their body to be classified as a Teacup Persian.
Just to be clear, I’m not saying silver or gold is no small thing, the point is that silver or gold must be visually present in a cat to be classified as a “teacup cat”.
Fact: There is no such thing as a Himalayan teacup! ! !
While no breeder can guarantee adult size for any color, you can rest assured that if you are buying a silver or gold, your overall anatomy is the smallest size a cat can carry.
I’ve found that golden Persians are usually not much smaller than silver Persians, but there are some.
Persian and Himalayan cats of normal size are usually large, short and muscular.
A normal-sized female Persian or Himalayan cat weighs about 7-9 pounds.
A normal-sized male Persian or Himalayan cat weighs about 8-12 pounds.
Silver and Gold Persians are naturally smaller cats, but they are never grouped or classified into “breed or size categories,” simply called the smallest and most petite of the Persian cat family.
Silver and Gold Persian cats typically weigh about 4-6 lbs for females and 6-7 lbs for males.
This is not an exact size chart, but just a guide to keep in mind when considering Teacup Persia.
Silver and gold Persians generally have a smaller overall bone structure than a normal sized Persian or Himalayan…not that you can’t occasionally get small framed Persians or Himalayans from other color categories, it’s just silver and golden’s to keep Famous for producing these small Persian cats.
Teacup Persians are just as healthy, cute and ungraceful as regular-sized Persians, just on a smaller scale.
Teacup Persians (at least the ones produced in our cattery) are purebreds and have not been crossed with another breed in any way to achieve their natural pudgy build/size.
Teacup Persians are generally more expensive not because of their smaller size, but because their coat colors fall into the more expensive designer category.
Silver and gold Persian cats have long been known as the “Royal Royce” of the Persian world, so you should expect a more refined price tag when buying a teacup Persian kitten.
Teacup Persians are available in a fairly small number of colors: shaded silver, silver chinchilla, shaded gold chinchilla, blue silver chinchilla.
Extremely Rare Designer Teacup Colors: Blue Totoro Gold, Silver & White, Gold & White & Blue Totoro & White, Red Shell Embossed, Cream Shell Embossed.
PLEASE NOTE: Because Silvers & Goldens (teacups) are smaller and more delicate, they should never be allowed out of a breeder’s home until they are at least 12 weeks old! !
All ethical cat breeders enforce this adoption age limit on all teacup Persian kittens.
FYI – all silvers and golds are born very dark and then lighten with age. They will get their true coat and eye color at 2 years of age. I really wish I had clarified “teacup Persians” and their inherently small size on this page.
“Based on sincerity, building trust”… This is our philosophy.
So keep in mind that if you are looking for a smaller cat, you will most likely want a silver or gold Persian. However, it’s important to remember…they’re not “miniature cats,” they’re just known for being the tiniest of cats.
