How Much Do I Need From My Garden?
Every year, gardeners face one of two situations. You see one every year when you grow zucchini, and if you’re a parent, you hear it a lot from your kids. “Zucchini again?” Another situation is when the garden doesn’t have enough produce to last the season. In the past, knowing how much to plant was a matter of guesswork, but today we have tools that can guide us to more appropriate educated inferences.
To get the most out of this garden tool, you must first understand human nature. First of all, adults are more likely to eat vegetables than children. While there are exceptions to this rule, this is the general premise of the tool, contrary to what kids might say about French fries being a healthy alternative to fresh vegetables.
The second premise this tool uses is the amount of space adults need compared to children. Adults need 4 square feet of garden space per day for each meal. The average child needs only 4 square feet per day per meal. That means if you’re harvesting just for dinner salad, you’ll only need a 4-square-foot garden.
To help with understanding, let’s create a diagram. The leftmost column will be the name of the person you plan to serve. In my example, I will use a family of three. The next column represents the child’s individual 4 x 4 garden space or 3 x 3 garden space.
In this example, Mom is going to eat a salad for lunch and dinner. This means she will check two columns. Dad is only going to have one salad for dinner, so he only has to check one column. With the kid only 5 years old, doing this would only require checking a 3 sq. ft. garden space.
The family also decided to try an urban homestead, and doing so required vegetables to preserve for the coming year. Since every household benefits from these veggies, there’s an extra column to check.
The family wanted to donate some fresh produce to a local food bank. In doing so, they decided to plant another 4 x 4 of their garden space for their food donation.
Once the family’s needs are checked on the chart, the process of adding the check is simple. Then multiply the number of checks by the size of the garden space. This number is the amount of square footage you need for this home
If you’re using the square footage garden method, just multiply the number you have in mind by yourself. This will give you the total number of plants you need for that season, which includes cool or canola crops and warm season crops.
Knowing how much you need for a season will save your budget, reduce waste, and allow you to plan for the season as a whole. Once you have this information, you can be ready for the deluge of torrent directories filling your mailbox.
