GM Diet – My Experiments With the Truth
You may love it or hate it, but I am sure that if you are looking for ways to lose weight, you can never ignore it. The General Motors Diet, or popularly known as the GM Diet, ranks high on the most popular diet charts. Surprisingly, I have yet to find any information about the GM Diet on any of the official General Motors websites (please update me if I have missed any).
Various websites, blogs and forums have discussed the GM diet, but scatteredly. My primary intention behind this post is to present the various aspects of this diet plan and give a comprehensive overview based on my experience and that of my friends.
BACKGROUND:
This diet plan was presented at the general meeting of General Motors Corp. on August 15, 1985, originally designed for General Motors employees to facilitate health and fitness. It was awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture and the FDA, and tested by the Johns Hopkins Research Center.
It has been designed as a ‘detox diet program’ to improve metabolism through its cleansing systemic effects, resulting in an improved mood and sense of well-being. Ultimately, a weight loss of 4-6 kg was expected during the program week.
PLAN:
Here is the daily diet plan and its dietary significance. I added a few things from my experience and experiments that worked.
Day 1:
Fruit of any kind (except bananas) in any quantity. The most preferred fruits are watermelons and cantaloupes due to their high water content. In addition, you should drink at least 10 glasses of water.
By eating fruit, you prepare your system for the upcoming program. Fresh fruit is nature’s perfect food and provides all the essential elements needed to sustain life. Fruit is also a good source of antioxidants and is rich in fiber. Fruit is also considered a negative calorie food, so it burns more calories when digested than those provided.
Trust me, I’ve done the GM diet twice and this day was the hardest. On the one hand, because of the sweet taste of all fruits, and on the other hand, because of the intense desire for bread or spices that develops towards the end of the day. The solution is a soup that breaks the monotony of the fruity taste.
Day 2:
The day can start with a large baked potato with one portion of butter for breakfast. It will definitely fill you up with complex carbohydrates to start your day after the first sweet and fruity day.
For the rest of the day, you should eat all the vegetables of your choice, raw or cooked. Vegetables are very low in calories, high in nutrients and fiber. There is no height limit. This should be added with drinking at least 10 glasses of water.
You can also mash a baked potato, add some onions and curd and season it with chaat masala and red chili powder and a pinch of salt.
Day 3:
This day consists of a combination of fruits and vegetables of your choice, except for banana and potato. In addition, you should drink at least 10 glasses of water. Avoid potatoes on this day as carbohydrates are available from the fruit you eat.
You can make different salads mixed with slices of fruit. If you eat more cucumbers and melons, you are more likely to lose weight than any other vegetable or fruit. Adding cottage cheese to vegetable salad in the form of “raita” will make it tastier in the evening when it becomes monotonous.
Day 4:
A day when you can eat nothing but eight bananas and three glasses of milk. It is not mandatory to eat 8 bananas; you can have less. In fact, you can feel satisfied within 4-5 bananas throughout the day. This is the day when you can clearly feel that your appetite decreases significantly. It is a divine feeling to overcome your ‘desires’. Remember to drink at least 10 glasses of water, as always.
Bananas will act as a provider of easily digestible carbohydrates along with a reserve of sodium and potassium.
Day 5:
This is considered a “feast” where you should eat up to two servings of lean beef (10 oz.) combined with six whole tomatoes – as a source of fiber. On this day, you should increase your daily water intake to at least 14 glasses. This is to clear your system of the uric acid produced. You will experience colorless urine on this day.
Beef is a source of protein and iron, so paneer (tofu – soya paneer for better results) combined with mushrooms can be an alternative for vegetarians. Many people have recommended rice as a substitute for beef, but if we consider the nutritional content, rice cannot be the right substitute.
Day 6:
Another day with beef and vegetables. Today you can eat any amount of beef combined with cooked or raw vegetables. Keep your daily water intake at 14 glasses. You can add soup to spice up your day.
Iron and protein from beef or paneer-mushroom combination, fiber and nutrients from vegetables. By this time you must have experienced the energetic feeling and realization of the power of natural foods.
Day 7:
Food intake on this day should consist of a bowl of brown rice with fruit juices and whatever vegetables you want to eat. Drink 14 glasses of water.
Juices break the fast (?) providing essential nutrients along with the vegetable filling. Brown rice provides carbohydrates.
Now you must be at least 4 kg lighter than the first day, yet have more energy and no cravings for high-calorie things.
Soup:
The following soup is a modified version of the GM Wonder Soup, as it is not possible to get the Lipton Onion Soup Mix everywhere as suggested in the GM Soup. The modified soup goes hand in hand with ‘rassam’ or ‘saaram’ which is served in South India. This soup is allowed to be consumed in large quantities throughout the program. It is intended as a supplement to your diet.
Boil some large chopped onions, tomatoes, cabbage and celery in water. Add sambhar masala to taste. Instead of tomatoes, you can also add tomato puree (but with the skin) to make it thicker. It can be flavored with herbs and seasonings. You can also add: asparagus, peas, corn, cauliflower, green beans or finely chopped mushrooms.
General instructions for all days:
- The water you drink every day can be squeezed out of a lemon.
- No alcohol of any kind as it adds empty calories.
- Salt should be used as little as possible.
- Use an artificial sweetener if you can’t avoid a sweet tooth.
- No fruit juices until day seven.
- Black coffee or tea is allowed.
If you want to lose more weight, you can repeat the plan, but it is recommended that you take a break of at least two weeks between the two plans.

Now the most important: doubts, accusations and myths.
“It only works by losing water content in the body and not actually losing fat.”
A. First, there is no mention of limiting water intake on any given day. How can a person lose only water if we drink at least 10-14 glasses of water a day, plus unlimited soup and water contained in melons, fruits and vegetables?
b. It basically works on the principle of “negative calorie foods”, where you eat certain foods that require more calories to burn than they provide on their own. High fiber foods fill you up but don’t provide the calories you need, instead requiring more calories to burn themselves, which is derived from stored energy stores.
“The skin gets dry and you can lose hair during and after the GM diet.”
A. At least I haven’t met anyone in my acquaintance who has complained about it, but I have found it on several blog posts. The reason may be insufficient water intake and insufficient supply of protein sources on certain days.
“It’s a temporary loss and you’ll gain all the lost pounds back in a few weeks.”
A. Obviously if you go back to high calorie food again. It’s not hard to lose weight, but to keep it off. Malvika, my wife who is a nutritionist, always recommends a maintenance diet program after the GM diet schedule as follows:
i. Three consecutive days a week for dinner only liquids in the form of soups, buttermilk or fruit juices. This should be followed indefinitely until you want your weight back.
ii. Drink lots of water as if you were on a GM diet.
iii. Exercise regularly.
“It’s just a crash diet and a fad, nothing else!”
A. First of all, it is not advertised as a weight loss diet, but a detox diet that will cleanse your system from the inside out. Losing weight is just a byproduct of it.
b. Although one looks at it as a “crash diet”, it certainly won’t harm you, but it will “shift” your weight in the shortest possible time, thus motivating many people who tend to abandon their regular diet and exercise regime within the first month, for not achieving the desired results. Once you “see” your weight coming off, it strengthens your will to keep trying.
C. As stated above, it’s useless if you don’t back it up with a maintenance program. You can’t be on a GM diet for life, nor can you or should you do it every month. Instead, use it as an initial motivator and move on to the liquid dinner course later.
MY OWN EXPERIENCE:
I myself have been on the GM diet twice. The first time I watched it was very honest. I thank my wife and my mother who provided all the meals for each day. On the fifth day I lost 4 kg. For the last two days I could lose no more, and I suppose with the rice I ate as a substitute for the beef. The lost weight stayed there for a month, even though she wasn’t actively maintaining it. I could have lost at least half a pound more if I had stayed away from rice, which I absolutely do not like to eat.
I started it next time but had to leave it in the meantime due to some unavoidable circumstances. But in the four days I followed it, I saw a significant change in my weight and energy levels.
The most significant gain was when my lipids came back to normal. I had really bad lipid levels for 2 years and after going on the GM diet twice, being on statins and self-prescribed homeopathic medicine, the last lipid levels were completely within normal limits. The fiber-rich GM diet is also to blame for this.
CONCLUSION:
If the GM diet is followed honestly, it clearly has a positive effect on our metabolism. I agree that it is not an end in itself and the metabolism needs to be maintained with appropriate eating habits and exercise regime. The GM diet cannot be a ‘quick and easy’ substitute for ‘effort’, but it can certainly be a boost for those who have never seen their weight go downhill and provide a ‘jump start’.
As Malvika says, “One should follow a diet that one can follow for life…” and that is true! You can never have a GM diet for every day because there are so many delicacies around to enjoy, but for that we need to have a balanced metabolism to give them due justice.
