Arnold, Frank Zane, Bob Kennedy, And the Importance of Enzymes In Your Diet

A few months ago, I met publishing legend Bob Kennedy at the MuscleMag offices in Mississauga, Ontario. That’s exciting, of course, because Bob Kennedy has been publishing a health and fitness magazine for over 25 years. In fact, one of the most exciting things in my bodybuilding career happened when I was reported on Canadian Corner nearly 10 years ago when my photo was featured in my provincial championship overall.

I will be forever grateful to Bob for his coverage of the sport, which meant a lot to me and helped me achieve my first big dream of having my photo in his magazine.

Amazingly, nearly a decade later, I came face-to-face with one of the biggest names in bodybuilding.

Bob was a tall, soft-spoken man who looked older than the smiling photos I’d seen in the editorial section of his new magazine, REPS. He told me that he started REPS to bring bodybuilding back to the golden age of physiques in the 60s and 70s, when bodybuilders could achieve a healthy and desirable physique without having to take a lot of drugs.

This was of course the era often referred to as the golden age of bodybuilding. Watch legends like Arnold, Frank Zane, Francolumbus, Robbie Robinson and all the gang bask in the sun on Venice Beach or get in an intense workout at Jogord Gym in Venice.

I listened intently to Bob, still as keen on pumping iron as ever, then recalled his conversation with the legendary Frank Zane the night before.

Bob had a good laugh as he recounted how Frank spent hours on the phone talking about bodybuilding, where it was and where it was going. I thought to myself, “Geez, imagine Frank Zane calling you and asking you to talk for hours. Most people would kill to talk to Frank for 10 minutes, and here, Frank calls Bob and talks for a few hours for free.” Hours of bodybuilding.

Well, one thing led to another, and before you know it, Bob shared with me Frank’s insight on Arnold and the rumor that Arnold was told by his doctor that he could no longer train because of a heart condition.

Well, I can’t comment on whether that report is true, Frank did pass on some first hand experiences with Arnold when they used to hang out at Muscle Beach back in the 70’s.

Frank tells Bob that Arnold is a big eater and eats all kinds of junk food in the off-season. Sure, he’s focused like a laser when he’s on a diet, something only Arnold can do, but Frank knows full well that Arnold would love to eat tons of fried food and candy. Other bodybuilders would try to follow Arnold’s plan, only to end up fat, out of shape, and most of all, confused.

Arnold was blessed with a fast metabolism, and he was also known for his incredible stamina levels. Usually training for more than 4 hours a day, eating junk food when he was a child is fine, obviously this has little effect on his physique.

Even after his bodybuilding career ended, Arnold continued his grueling life as a movie star, entrepreneur and current governor of California. While no one would consider challenging Arnold’s accomplishments as he is the inspiration for every bodybuilder who has ever lifted a barbell, Arnold’s once famous body has regressed, regressive for a man of his age and physical ability Probably to a greater degree than it should be.

The question is of course why? How could something like this happen to the greatest bodybuilder of all time?

Part II Enzymes, Metabolic Impairment – Effects of Poor Diet

Frank believed that Arnold’s disregard for clean eating had a detrimental effect on his metabolism. He told Bob Kennedy that he felt that all the junk food was taking a toll on Arnold’s enormous physical strength in some way. Eventually, Arnold’s body began to show signs of wear and tear. His genetic heart condition required surgery, forcing Arnold to reduce his training intensity and focus more on cardiovascular training.

It seemed that life had dealt the champion perhaps the cruelest hand of all, not allowing the seven-time Mr. Olympia to train at all, despite being still a relatively young man at 60.

Frank also admitted to Bob that he finds it harder and harder each year to be in top shape because his body doesn’t respond to training the way it did 10, 20 or even 30 years ago. Even though Frank was a bit older than Arnold, he still maintained a good physique for a man of any age and was known to pay close attention to everything he ate.

Bob asked me what I thought of the two cases, and I quickly pointed out that both Arnold and Frank had the same problem, just at different levels of intensity. Bob quickly agrees and adds, yes, that’s what’s called the “aging process”. This of course elicited a burst of laughter from all present, as most of those around during the conversation could understand.

I laughed too, but quickly added…”Okay, I’m sure you’re talking about the real Bob, but have you ever considered what causes aging?”

Bob looked at me more seriously than before and asked, “What the hell do I mean?”

Realizing that this was my moment, I quickly presented as succinctly as possible the research done by enzyme pioneer Dr. Howell, and how he discovered that the rate of aging is directly proportional to the total enzymatic potential of any substance. biology.

Part Three What are Digestive Enzymes?

You’ll see enzymes often found in foods, whether it’s fruits, vegetables, or even meats that occur naturally in nature. Breaking down and digesting food requires digestive enzymes, which are divided into 4 main digestive enzymes and a whole host of other enzymes and enzyme precursors. Sucrase and lactase are two enzymes you may be familiar with, mainly because some people are unable to digest certain foods due to a deficiency of these enzymes.

protease – digests protein

Amylase – digests carbohydrates

Lipase – digests fat

Cellulase – digests cellulose (i.e. fiber) in vegetables

There are many other enzymes, eg.

Sucrase – Digests sugar (sucrose)

Lactase – digests lactose (sugar in milk)

And the list goes on with other enzymes enzyme precursors etc.

Research shows that any food heated above 118 degrees loses all of its enzymes. In other words, all cooked foods lack digestive enzymes.

Foods that are processed, irradiated, grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or grown on mineral-poor soils all contain trace amounts of naturally occurring enzymes.

Our bodies are actually designed to recognize the taste of enzymes and nutrient-dense foods by looking for foods that break down easily and taste sweet. Anyone who has eaten vegetables or fruit from an organic garden or farm will quickly attest to how different organically grown enzyme-rich foods can taste.

You see nature designed our food to break down on its own in our digestive tract, but modern humans have gone against nature’s natural ways and started eating foods that lack enzymes.

Humans are the only species on earth that can cook for themselves. Humans are also the only species on earth that puts chemicals in the ground to grow food or spray pesticides on food, we are the only species that create food using chemicals, additives, artificial sweeteners, artificial preservatives or worse genetics Modified food.

The bottom line is that humans are fighting against over 4 billion years of evolution. Now this is serious.

Now you might say what does this have to do with Arnold? More importantly, what does this have to do with you.

everything…
